The Cévennes village of Aumessas is made up of several hamlets and neighborhoods with typical granite and schist housing. Part of the commune lies within the Cévennes National Park. The church and temple symbolize the presence of 2 religions. The village is at the heart of a Protestant country that has held together despite more than a century of repressive wars.

Worth seeing:

– The 12th-century church, with its Benedictine-style comb bell tower, typical of the Cévennes and Gévaudan regions, partly restored after the Camisard revolt. The original bell, listed as a Monument Historique, can still be seen at the back of the church.

– The temple, built in the 17th century, was destroyed during the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes and rebuilt in the 19th century.

– The main square and old railway station, linked to the arrival of the Le Vigan/Tournemire line in the 19th century, which gave the village its original curved viaduct.

– The facades of merchants’ houses, including the Maison Marquès du Luc.

– The 14th-century Château de la Rode, a typical Cévenole manor house with a magnificent spiral staircase and monumental fireplace.

– The silk spinning mill, now the Chabal brickworks, bears witness to Aumessas’ industrial past.
