Villeneuve, saved in the XIth century then bastide in the XIIIth century, located in the west of the Aveyron, near the Lot, the Tarn and the Garonne. A village on the Causse.
Founded in 1053, Villeneuve has a Romanesque church, in the shape of a Greek cross, a copy of the original sanctuary of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. In 1231, Count Raymond VII of Toulouse granted it municipal freedoms and the status of Bastide. The town, managed by 4 consuls, became a prosperous market. The gothic part of the church (13th century) is decorated with wall paintings from the 14th century, representing scenes from the pilgrimage to St Jacques de Compostelle, notably the famous legend of the hanged man. Two watchtowers, a covered square and a network of cobbled streets introduce the visitor to an intact medieval town. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
