CHATEAU DES HOSPICES DE CANET
CANET-EN-ROUSSILLON , Pyrénées-Orientales
About
In the heart of the village of Canet en Roussillon, Marc represents the fifth generation of winegrowers to have worked the estate since 1936. Today, two generations, Michel the father and Marc the son, work the 50 hectares of vines that make up the estate on a daily basis. Right in the heart of Canet village, the estate’s cellar is housed in a marvellous building dating from 1863, one of the oldest in the village. The building was bought by Louis Benassis in 1968 from the Perpignan Hospital, from which it takes its name “Cave des Hospices”. The architecture of this building is in the pure Catalan style of the period, with walls of Cayroux and rolled pebbles and ceilings of reeds. The vineyard is located on the terraces of the river Têt, between the Catalan coast and Perpignan. The combination of a Mediterranean climate and very stony clay-limestone soils gives our wines their distinctive character.
