ABBATIALE DE SERVIAN
SERVIAN , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
The Church of Servian, dedicated to Saint Julien and Saint Basilisse d’Antioche, dominates the village and the countryside. It dates from the end of the XIIth century, and even for some foundations from the VIIIth century. Originally, it was built in Romanesque style, modified and completed in Ogival style. The first building, already fortified, defended the village from the east. In the 14th century, the church was granted a fief for its maintenance (royal letter of 1345): it was enlarged, its nave extended to the level of the current Sainte Table. The large stained glass windows date from 1875, and the repair of 1876 transformed the ornamentation of the church: the old carved stone altars were replaced by marble altars.
