BONNEFONT ABBEY
PROUPIARY , Haute-Garonne – Cultural heritage
About
Former Cistercian abbey, granddaughter of Cîteaux, founded in 1136, the site of Bonnefont was greatly dismantled in the 19th century and these elements were resold. PLEASE NOTE: visit by appointment only.
From its creation in 1136 to its dismantling in the 19th century, the Abbey of Bonnefont was one of the most important religious and economic actors in the south of Toulouse. We owe to him in particular the creation of many bastides such as Boussens, Carbonne or Plaisance du Touch. Its buildings were largely resold following the Revolution, which explains why nowadays the site is composed only of the Porterie, the Building of the Convers, the Lavabo and some other architectural pieces. Property of the Community of Communes of Saint-Martory since 2010, the Abbey welcomes you every summer to discover its history, its medieval-inspired garden and an exhibition. [COVID] A historical guided tour is offered every opening day at 3pm, and another one of the garden at 4pm. Outside these hours, you can visit the garden at your own pace, especially to discover the beautiful OXYMORE exhibition by Stéphanie Joffre and Francis Debax. In order to respect everyone’s safety, a gauge of 9 people per visit is established, with the wearing of a mask MANDATORY. Therefore we strongly recommend that visitors reserve by phone or e-mail.
