About
Since 2007, the Benedictine community of twenty monks of the Abbey of Notre Dame du Donezan has been based in the Ariège region of France, in the canton of Donezan, from which it takes its name, and lives simply by working the land, raising livestock and making small-scale crafts.
In 1994, sixteen monks from Fontgombault Abbey left their motherhouse to found Gaussan Abbey in the Aude region. At the time, they earned their living by cultivating around six hectares of vines and raising around twenty goats. But in 2005, after a long period of community reflection, they decided to move to the Pyrenees, in Ariège to be precise, where they acquired a piece of land lost in the Donezan canton.
