LEGEND
According to the legend, in 1338 a noble lady crossed this place invaded by brambles and reptiles. A huge snake would have wrapped itself around one of her legs. Frightened, she implored the Virgin to come to her rescue. Mary appeared to her and crushed the head of the snake. In gratitude, the noblewoman built a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, near a fountain which gave its name to the place (“fons currens” which means running fountain will later become Notre Dame de Foncourrieu).
ARCHITECTURE

The Romanesque building has been modified many times. In the 17th century, the chapel was enlarged and entirely decorated. At that time the choir and the vault of the nave were entirely covered with magnificent paintings.
SAINT-BOURROU
The statue of the Virgin Mary in polychrome wood, in the attitude of the Magnificat (one hand on the heart, the other raised to the sky), dressed in a red dress, decorated with bunches of grapes and a blue cloak is venerated by the winegrowers who dedicate their vines to her. She is also the protector of children.
On Whit Monday, a mass is celebrated in the open air during the wine and winegrowers’ festival called Saint Bourrou (Bourrou means bud in Occitan).
