CHAPELLE DE GABRIAC

GABRIAC , Lozère – Cultural heritage

About

As you follow the paths of the Gabriac discovery trail, which will help you discover the scattered settlements that characterise the Cévennes valleys, you will pass a building mentioned as a chapel, which is in fact the former parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, built very close to the castle. This medieval church, recently restored, is rectangular in plan with a beautiful Romanesque schist apse with a barrel vault. The cemetery was located on the adjacent plot, as was the priory-cure of which only vestiges remain. Opposite the chapel are the remains of a massive building whose façade is punctuated by regular bays. Another typical Cévennes building, this former silkworm farm is the place where, in the 19th century, silkworms were bred and fed. This practice, known as sericulture, enabled the inhabitants of the area to earn an additional income.
