NOUMERENS CHAPEL
AURIAC-SUR-VENDINELLE , Haute-Garonne – Cultural heritage
About
A little gem of Romanesque art in the Laurentian countryside to be discovered without delay!
The Notre-Dame de Noumérens Chapel dates from the 11th century with archaic masonry from an earlier building and a half-buried doorway. We notice a very beautiful Romanesque chrism above the entrance portal, i.e. the letters ki and ro, the first letters of “christos” and the very beautiful bell tower wall pierced with 3 campanile bays. In the Middle Ages, this building was located on the salt road and the road to Santiago de Compostela which goes from Arles to Toulouse. This chapel has been the subject of a restoration campaign since 2005. It was indeed very damaged in the middle of the 80s, and the roof had even ended up falling down. A handful of volunteers, attached to their heritage, gradually made sure that this beautiful chapel could be visited again. The church is located in the middle of the Lauragaise countryside: a dirt road allows access to it (in case of rain, do not venture there by car!).
