About

From the Middle Ages to the 20th century, there is only one step: it is in the Romanesque chapel of the fortified site of Villelongue that a museum of the Resistance has been created. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme

Let yourself be dropped 80 years back in time!
Created to keep history alive, it is mainly dedicated to the Maquis Antoine who operated in the area and found refuge there during the Occupation. Indeed, the former hamlet of Villelongue was ideally located to access the Lucante parachute drop zone, nearby.
This museum-chapel brings together explanatory panels enriched with archive documents, weapons and military objects, all under the protective umbrella of a deployed parachute.
A little history
During the Second World War, from May 1944, the commune of Cabanès was home to the Maquis Antoine, who established themselves in the Lézert valley to operate in the Ségala between the Tarn and the Aveyron.
Why this name ? It was in April 1944 that Antoine Pech, a butcher from Carmaus, was appointed leader of the Villelongue maquis, which thus took his name.
Curious to know more? Click here for some reading and come visit the chapel, which is open by volunteers on Sunday afternoons from the beginning of July to mid-September.
For groups, it is also possible to organize a visit by appointment throughout the year.
An important anecdote!
On July 22, 1944, an illustrious visitor in the person of Colonel Berger (alias André Malraux). The Inspector General of the FFI met here with the leaders of the Veny maquis, with whom he had lunch before leaving at about 3 pm in a traction vehicle which was ambushed in Gramat. Arrested by the Gestapo, he was interrogated and incarcerated in the Saint Michel prison in Toulouse.
Our little advice
To take advantage of the unique atmosphere of this place, accessible all year round, we recommend a picnic break next to the ruins of the medieval castle overlooking the valley.
