Chapelle Saint-Amant

THEZIERS , Gard – Cultural heritage

About

In the 12th century, the monks of St-Victor Abbey in Marseille decided to build a chapel on this site. First mention of the building in 1113, in the cartulary of the Abbey of Marseille.

The exterior decoration consists of a gear frieze (on the top of the south crosspiece) and a sawtooth frieze on the top arch of the south entrance. Stain marks can be seen.
The interior features projecting keystones, a reference to the Pont du Gard. 2 Roman inscriptions recall the settlement of Tedusia. They are embedded in the choir.
Left: “Aux dieux mânes de Livia Chrysopolis, Lucius Aemilius Philomenus à son épouse”.
Right: “To the gods and spirits of Vallia Berenice of high merit x and Generosus had this stele engraved”.
The transept crossing bears the 4 evangelists.
