The chapel is located above the hamlet of Vitrolles, on a hillside overlooking the Nize valley. It is a pilgrimage chapel located on a site that seems to have been occupied perhaps since the Gallo-Roman period. Abbot Brun, who restored it in 1834, brought to light the remains of an important construction which he then interpreted as being the remains of a castle belonging to the Barons of Tournel, of which the chapel would have been part. The excavations of 1869 by the abbot Boissonade brought to light bricks, fragments of pottery and glassware. Although it is difficult to date the construction, it could be of medieval origin; the barrel vault is in fact partially supported by a frieze of arches reminiscent of lésenes. The entrance door to the west resembles the barn entrances of the farms in the surrounding countryside and probably dates from the 19th century.
