CHATEAU ET VILLAGE DE CASTELBOUC

SAINTE-ENIMIE , Lozère – Cultural heritage

About

Hung on the cliffs of Causse, it is a troglodyte village overhung by a magnificent castle in ruins. The castle was demolished in the 16th century because it served as a haven for looters, but its ruins still dominate the village. It is also said that Castelbouc Castle was so named because only goats could climb to the ruins. Legend has it that at the time of the Crusades, the lord of the castle was left alone of his sex, among his subjects. In this small hamlet made of dwellings contiguous to the cliff, the visitors were numerous and this lord wanted to satisfy all their desires … unfortunately the crusade lasted so long that it could not hold until the end. When his soul flew away, a huge goat was seen hovering over the tower of the castle. Since then, you can hear the night on these summits, a bleating followed by strange murmurs. From there, would come the name of Castelbouc …
