At the revocation of the edict of Nantes in the seventeenth century, the revolt is in full swing in Languedoc. The governor of the province Lamoignon de Basville fears the possible alliance with the insurgents, a rich lord influential and respected. Baron François Pelet de Salgas is one of the richest gentlemen of the Cevennes. Marshal de Montrevel, king’s dragons’ patron, hates him and watches him. The current rumor that de Salgas had ordered the massacre of Fraissinet de Fourques, fief of the Catholics, he was arrested. After a tendentious trial, Baron François Pelet de Salgas nicknamed “the king of Camisards” was sentenced to death or galleys. De Basville opted for the galleys. In the eighteenth the period was quite prosperous, the Catholic family of Bernis rebuilt the castle of Salgas.
