SOMMIERES , Gard – Cultural heritage
About
Sommières, Petite Cité de Caractère, was built around the Vidourle river and the Roman bridge.
Sommières was built around the Vidourle river. In ancient times, in the 1st century AD, the Pont Romain was built on the orders of Emperor Tiberius. This 21-arch, 200-meter-long structure enabled the Roman road linking Nîmes and Toulouse to span the Vidourle.
In the Middle Ages, the population gathered around the protective castle.
Discover the history of the town of Sommières, its architectural treasures bearing witness to a very rich past and a fascinating history, during an original visit.
Today, part of Sommières is classified as a protected area, and a policy of heritage conservation and restoration has been put in place.
