About
Southern Gothic church, built under Cardinal Arnaud de Via, nephew
of Pope John XXII. The church has several paintings and a copy of the
famous Pièta de Villeneuve Lez Avignon (the original is in the Louvre).
Le chapitre collégial Notre-Dame : Le cardinal Arnaud de Via, neveu du pape Jean XXII, fonde dans sa livrée un chapitre de douze chanoines auquel il lègue ses biens en 1336. Il agrandit sa chapelle qui devient l’église-collégiale Notre-Dame. En 1350, les chanoines font édifier le cloître attenant à l’église ainsi que le beffroi. Le cloître, adossé au nord, desservait les autres bâtiments du monastère. En 1792, la collégiale devient l’église paroissiale en remplacement de l’église Saint-Pons
