The keep of Saint-Chély is an old watchtower which allowed the barons of Apcher to watch the surroundings of the village and to transmit messages from tower to tower. Around 1820, the battlements were removed and the four bays were pierced to house the bells. Since then, it has served as the town’s bell tower, although it is far from the church. It was also used as a prison after having been used as an ammunition room. Later, the interior was remodeled, the underground room was cleared and the floor and wooden stairs were redone
A little anecdote, the cross at the top of the tower was fixed by Oriola Funambules, a family of tightrope walkers from the south of France, in 1957.
