AUBORD , Gard – Cultural heritage

About

Destroyed during the Wars of Religion, it was rebuilt in the 17th century.
Its font is listed as a Historic Monument.

Dependent on the archpriesthood of Nîmes and served until the 19th century by the parish priest of Bernis, the original church was destroyed during the Wars of Religion. Rebuilt in 1658, then remodeled in the 19th century, it now takes the form of a large quadrilateral, in a single volume under a double-pitched roof broken to create false side aisles from the outside. The façade faces a narrow street, and is delimited by two veneered buttresses. A rectangular portal is surmounted by a blind semicircular tympanum, with a small ashlar oculus above, topped by a cornice decorated in imitation of the Romanesque Lombard bands, but arranged here under the roof eaves and forming a gable up to the bell tower. This is a simple bell tower with a single bell. As the entrance from the street is dangerous, a door and another oculus have been built into the side wall of the church, on the west side. The church is therefore not oriented.
The church has a stoup (or fountain) listed as a Monument Historique.
