About
The present St Hippolyte collegiate church is the third church of Malzieu. The first church, in Romanesque style, was destroyed in 1573 during the Wars of Religion. It was rebuilt in 1582, in the Gothic style. Having become too small, Abbot Clavel replaced it by a new one, in neo-Romanesque style, bigger in 1882. It houses a collection of liturgical objects and the Virgin of Apcher. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
The present collegiate church of Saint Hippolyte is the third church of Le Malzieu. Indeed, the first church, of Romanesque style dating probably from the eleventh century was destroyed by the Huguenot captain Mathieu Merle in 1573 during the Wars of Religion. It was rebuilt in 1582, in the Gothic style. Having become too small, the Abbot Clavel undertook to replace it with a new one in neo-Romanesque style, larger but not oriented, in 1882. Stones from these previous constructions can be seen outside the church and on the wall of the neighbouring school. The square bell tower, covered by a spire, was completed in 1885.
The church of Saint Hippolyte also conceals its “treasure of sacred art”, a remarkable collection of liturgical objects, accessible on Thursday afternoons during the summer.
You can also admire a magnificent 13th century “Virgin in Majesty” made of wood, lead and tin. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
