About

The church of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre is classified as a Historic Monument. It is the former abbey of the Benedictine monastery founded at the beginning of the 11th century by Duke Sanche V of Gascony. The adjacent part of the bell tower preserves elements from the Romanesque period with sculpted capitals (12th century). The rest of the building welcomed the population and the many pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, who came to Saint Peter’s to worship his relics. The building houses important furniture, including the key of Saint Peter and the statue of Our Lady of Saint Peter, as well as a rich decoration from the 18th and 19th centuries.
