PONT DE MONTVERT CHURCH
LE PONT-DE-MONTVERT , Lozère – Cultural heritage
About
The church was built starting in 1861, replacing the old chapel on Rue de la Jalerie. This chapel had become the center of the parish at the beginning of the 19th century, and was described in a letter from the Bishop of Mende as “a kind of damp and dark cellar where one can neither decently celebrate the holy mysteries nor almost pray without contracting infirmities or being inconvenienced.” The project to build a church was realized after a veritable battle fought on all fronts by Abbé Rouvière, the parish priest of Le Pont from 1854. He obtained the personal support of the Bishop of Mende, exceptional subsidies from the State, donations from private individuals, and even launched a subscription among Catholics throughout France
