About

The Romanesque church of Saint-Sylvestre de Colombiers, formerly known as Sainte-Colombe “villa Colombario”, is said to have given the village its name. The church has survived three periods without ever being abandoned as a place of worship, although it was altered several times: ? Paleochristian (between 200 and 500 CE / Visigothic), ? Romanesque (10th to 12th centuries) ? Modern A first place of worship was built on a mound near the protohistoric road that preceded the Domitian Way. The precise date of its construction is unknown, but it probably dates from the early Christian era. Small in size, it occupied the present-day choir. Remains include two hooked capitals and the Visigothic altar, found further on and listed as a Monument Historique. Excavations of the ancient cemetery have uncovered several lauze tombs and sarcophagi, the best-preserved of which, with acroteria, is on display at the back of the church. At the end of the 10th century, the church was redesigned with the addition of an apse to the east. The small, regular, blond stonework is remarkable and well worth seeing from the garden behind the church, accessible from Rue du Presbytère. A very high bell tower, topped by a three-meter spire, was added in 1668. It was partially destroyed by lightning in 1855. At the end of the 19th century, the church was enlarged to its current appearance. The church is open to the public daily from 9am to 5pm.
