Église romane de Canac

About

This church is remarkable by the apposition of two successive Romanesque periods (11th and 12th c.) and two local “schools” (high valley of the Tarn and valley of the Lot). Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme

Built on the site of a Gallo-Roman site and ancient necropolis, it is placed under the patronage of Saint Cyr and Saint Juliette, his mother, martyred around 303.

It was enlarged with chapels in the 14th and 15th centuries and the upper parts were redesigned in the 19th century. It is a church with an apse and apses, the southern one having disappeared.

On the outside, the cornice of the chevet is soberly decorated with alternating full and empty spaces and a succession of arches supporting limestone slate covers. To the north and south, one can observe the presence of fireplaces; to the west, the elements of decoration from the Romanesque period remain under the porch and above, in the central arcature, one can see a series of capitals.

Inside, there are two remarkable Romanesque stones: the altar stone and another one, sealed under the window of the north chapel, with three arches and the representation of the sun, a star and the moon. The church of Perse (in Espalion), to which Canac was united, bears in its tympanum a representation of the crowned Virgin, surrounded by the moon and the sun. Wooden statue of Saint-Cyrice (end of the 13th century). Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
