EGLISE ROMANE SAINT-JEAN-BAPTISTE

LA MALENE , Lozère – Cultural heritage

About

Like monastic churches, La Malène can praise itself over its three naves. It was most likely the monks of Sainte-Enimie that, in the 12th century, built it. The central nave, with a round barrel vault, divided in three bays by rectangular transverse, is supported by four massive pillars. The semicircular semi-dome apse, is lighted up by three fan-shaped windows. It is flanked by two apse chapels, over the lateral naves. Outside, the apse has 5 bays; the gate with voussoirs date back to 1601. A chapel was added in the middle of the last century, on the north side; it shelters the remains of ‘La Malène martyrs’, executed in 1793.
