ÉGLISE SAINT BARTHÉLÉMY DE BOÔ

BOO-SILHEN , Hautes-Pyrénées – Cultural heritage

About

In Boô, the Romanesque church is dedicated to Saint Barthélémy. With its bell tower and classical doorway, situated on a small promontory, it was remodeled in the 18th century. The square tower topped with a pointed quadrangular roof may have served as a defensive tower in the Middle Ages. Notice the small bell tower (chimboulet) as in Arcizans. Curiously, the access steps are made of tombstones (one goes to God by walking on the dead…). Semi-circular chevet.
Inside, an astonishing wooden altarpiece painted in trompe-l’oeil framing a canvas representing the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew. The painter was not content to decorate the altarpiece. He also used his art to decorate the pulpit, the baptismal font and the gallery. Gilded wooden tabernacle from the 18th century. Amazing painted wood vault.
The church is classified as a M.H.
