SAINT ETIENNE’S – SAHORRE
SAHORRE , Pyrénées-Orientales – Cultural heritage
About
The original church of Sahorre is attested to as early as 869 in a deed indicating that it belonged to the abbey of Ste Marie d’Arles. This initial church was replaced by another in the Romanesque style during the 12th century. Dedicated to St Etienne, it has a single nave ending in a semi-circular apse. It has a 19m-high bell tower. On the outside, its chevet is superbly decorated with cogwheels and blind arcatures, and its bonding is meticulous. Inside, St Etienne has two side chapels carved into the thickness of the walls, giving the impression of a trefoil choir.
