In the past, the church was the “common house” where villagers gathered for all the important events of daily life, whether joyful or sad, to attend services on Sundays or to celebrate religious feasts.
In Norgeat, as in most of our mountain hamlets, we have to admit (with a certain nostalgia for the older members of the family) that our church has fallen asleep over time.
The door to the building is only opened for funerals, and the bells that once punctuated the daily life of the villagers remain stubbornly silent.
Today, few villagers can say when, why or how their church was built?
To answer these questions, while paying tribute to Norgeat’s courageous builders of the mid-19th century, and to contribute to the enhancement of our local heritage, twelve paintings retracing the history of the church of Saint Hilaire de Norgeat have just been installed on the outside wall of the building.
They are displayed on 4 large wooden panels, fixed on either side of the entrance door.
The history of Norgeat was drawn up on the basis of a study on “The Parish of Norgeat”.
This project, initiated by Jeanine Prosper, was made possible thanks to the remarkable work of a small team of volunteers, and the support of the Miglos municipality.
