About
Vimenet is an old fortified village from the 14th century. Today its ramparts still encircle the old village. The Romanesque church has a combed bell tower dating from the Middle Ages. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
Several parts of this church seem to date back to the 12th century. It would be built on the site of the chapel of a feudal castle.
Its combed bell tower (14th century) served as a dungeon and refuge.
From 1866 to 1869 it was enlarged between the choir and the bell tower, by public subscription.
Inside there is a Romanesque nave and a pentagonal Gothic choir (15th century). An altarpiece represents Saint Eutrope, Patron of the Weavers, and Saint Roch invoked against the plague and contagious diseases. In the 21st century, 2010-2011, the town hall and the parish have carried out important works: the repair of the entire interior plastering, the upgrading of the electricity, the restoration of the deteriorated stained glass windows and the replacement of the altar and the ambo and finally the restoration of the altarpiece.
Since the summer of 2021, the church has been home to an organ built around 1870 by the German organ builder Joseph Merklin.
It was previously in place in the temple of St Affrique and was donated by the Protestant parish of South Aveyron.
This romantic organ of 408 pipes, fully expressive, is now the property of the town hall of Vimenet. The town hall and the association l’Eau et la Pierre take in charge financially the restoration as well as the harmonization of this organ which illuminates the tribune of the Church.
The church is open every day. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
