SAINT MARY CHURCH – ALBARET

ALBARET-SAINTE-MARIE , Lozère – Cultural heritage

About

Built in the Romanesque style and topped with a charming comb-shaped bell tower typical of the region, the Church of Sainte-Mary presents a purely Romanesque architecture in its simplicity, constructed of large granite blocks. A magnificent two-story comb-shaped bell tower and a portal with semicircular arches stand out. Inside, the building follows the simplicity and austerity found on the exterior. It consists of a central nave leading to three side chapels. One of these, the southern chapel, is dedicated to Our Lady. At its east end stands a majestic cross covered by a veil. Finally, situated on the heights above the village, the church offers a breathtaking view of the Margeride region. And to top it all off, it has stairs allowing you to climb to the level of the bell tower. From up there, you’ll have the opportunity to observe up close one of those remarkable architectural features: the comb-shaped bell tower, and of course, the bells themselves! And let’s not forget the view…
