The Romanesque church of Saint-Saturnin from the 12th century and its priory are the witness of the passage of the Templars to Recoules d’Aubrac. They depended on the Hospitallers of Saint John, more precisely on the commandery of Palhers.
Standing on its granite rock, the village of Recoules d’Aubrac has many vestiges of this period: Maltese crosses placed at the four corners of the village.
The church also has a remarkable Templar cross. It is also distinguished by a particular architecture. The church of Saint-Saturnin has four bays as opposed to the usual three. Also, due to its high altitude, it has windows on only three facades, thus excluding the northern facade. The homogeneity of its style is enhanced by the colour of the red volcanic stone used for its decoration and by the magnificent capitals sculpted with animals and plants. Its portal is decorated with semi-circular arches and is dominated by a notable sculpted chessboard. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
