ÉGLISE SAINT VINCENT DE SILHEN

About

In Silhen, the small Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Vincent (patron saint of winegrowers) is later, dating from the 14th century. It is in fact, we believe, the former chapel of the noble house of the Ponts family, of which some ruins can be seen below. It was part of the archpriesthood of Préchac since 1342, with the churches of Boô and Asmets.
Situated on a hillock, an ancient feudal mound, with its gabled bell tower with seven redents, it has a small round Chrism of 58 cm in diameter, interesting, sculpted on the tympanum and covered with plaster. It has the particularity of having the Kristos, the X removed. And a stylized double Rho (P) which brings it closer to the Chrism of the church of Saint Pastous, without the S at the base of the shaft. A fantasy of the same sculptor? We are far from the classical Chrism.
Inside, the altarpiece from the end of the 17th century is made of trompe-l’oeil paintings attributed to Bernard DONZELOT d’Asson. The decoration covers the doors of the sacristy and the two bays of the panelled ceiling (similar to the neighbouring church of Boô). The very beautiful tabernacle from the end of the 17th century is attributed to the Soustre d’Asté workshop. On the door, Christ is accompanied by the Virgin and Saint John. At the ends, the two sculpted panels represent the Annunciation (Virgin on the prie-Dieu) and the Assumption. The ensemble is surmounted by two adoring angels dressed in the antique style. The bays are beautifully painted, with interlacing and foliage providing shelter for colourful birds. To the left of the painting, the statue of a man carrying a grill (the instrument of his martyrdom) is that of Saint Vincent, patron saint of the place.
The church is classified as a historical monument
