About
The church of Sainte-Marie de Montalba boasts the painted altarpiece of the main altar, a masterpiece dating from around 1600, with its marble Virgin, a masterpiece of the 14th century. Professor Daurliat attributed the altarpiece to Honoré Rigau, the great-grandfather of Louis XIV’s painter. The marble Virgin, traditionally known as Notre-Dame de la Vall Verda (Our Lady of the Green Valley), holds a pine cone in her hand while her child plays with a bird, which pinches her index finger with its beak. This altarpiece was listed as a historic monument in 1954. Two other small altarpieces, dating from a later century, are of excellent Baroque quality: the altarpiece of Christ, dated 1718 and decorated with the whole series of instruments of the Passion, and the altarpiece of Saints Gaudérique and Isidore, patron saints of peasants, dated 1715.
