SAINTE MARIE CHURCH

NASBINALS , Lozère – Cultural heritage

About

An essential stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, the church of Sainte-Marie de Nasbinals is nestled on the heights of the Aubrac plateau. A witness to the Auvergne Romanesque style, it also houses remarkable works of art within its walls. This is why it was classified as a Historic Monument in 1921. The church of Sainte-Marie de Nasbinals is an essential stop for hikers. Built during the XIth and XIIth centuries, it was reworked during the XIVth century without losing its Auvergne Romanesque style

An octagonal bell tower rises from the transept and ends majestically with a spire. Its portal is decorated with semi-circular arches framed by remarkably sculpted historiated capitals. One of them features a scene not often seen in sculpture: an archer facing a spearman protected by a typically medieval triangular shield
Another particularity, in the exterior wall of the south chapel, is carved in limestone one of the oldest sundials in the department, dated 1500.

The church of Sainte-Marie also houses some beautiful works of art. In its choir is fixed a magnificent polychrome wooden Christ on the cross and, in the south arm of its transept, a gilded wooden altarpiece, both dating from the 17th century. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
