About

Built by Vauban in the 18th century, the fort is a masterpiece of military architecture. Its purpose was to guard the two easiest entry points to France, the Perthus and Panissars passes. From its terrace, there is a unique view over the Roussillon and Empordà plains. Between France and Spain, the fort dominates the two Catalan regions. There are many exhibition rooms to visit: – on the parade ground: archaeological rooms, fire brigade exhibition, Retirada room – art exhibitions for the 2024 season (Aldo Comas, Jacques Martinez, Carmen Victoria). Guided tours depart every 45 minutes. Access until 4.45pm.
