THE MEDIEVAL INSPIRED GARDEN
SAINT-MARTIN-LE-VIEIL , Aude – Cultural heritage
About
At the top of the Saint-Martin-le-Vieil village, the old wheat threshing field is now home to an enormous rose constructed in stone, incorporating the local dry-stone building technique. The rose that is drawn on the ground mirrors the rose window of the Villelongue Abbey, now disappeared. It borrows the symbolic language of gardens from medieval illuminations; fences separating the unspoilt nature from the inhabitation; flowered lawns with well-defined alleys; stone benches; square plots of medicinal, aromatic and culinary plants. Free visits all year round.
