Notre-Dame des Sablons Church

AIGUES-MORTES , Gard – Cultural heritage

About

The Church of Notre-Dame des Sablons in Aigues-Mortes is an emblematic monument in the heart of the ramparts. It bears witness to the local medieval history. Its sober Gothic style contrasts with its central role in the city’s religious and cultural life.

The Church of Notre-Dame des Sablons, built in 1246 in Aigues-Mortes, is a historic gem nestled within the ramparts of this medieval city. Built of stone in a sober Gothic style, it once served as a place of prayer for crusaders before their departure for the Holy Land under the reign of Saint Louis. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several transformations.

Restored in the 19th century, it has regained its religious role while retaining its medieval charm. Today, its streamlined interior and modern stained glass windows make it a place of contemplation and meditation for visitors, in the heart of the Aigues-Mortes fortress.
