L’ÉGLISE SAINTE THÉRÈSE

TARBES , Hautes-Pyrénées – Cultural heritage

About

Like a watchtower, the church watches over the traditional space of the large market on Place Marcadieu.

Curiously enough, the atmosphere around this church is peaceful in contrast to its rich and eventful history.
The Carmelite monks who returned from the Holy Land founded a convent here in 1280: only the spire bears witness to this today. Sacked by the Huguenots and then by the revolutionaries, it became a national asset, a fodder store, a prison and barracks… Its current state is reminiscent of the Languedoc Gothic style with a single nave.

A polychrome and gilded statue of Teresa of Jesus, reformer of the Carmels of Spain and France, recalls the dedicatee of the church and the memory of its origins. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
