The old bridge and the Buscailhou

LE VIGAN , Gard – Cultural heritage

About

Since 1938, the entire site – bridge and houses – has been listed as a historic monument.
Before the bridge was built at the end of the 12th century, only a ford was used to cross the Arre river.

For a long time, it was the only passageway from one bank to the other, linking the Causse to the Cévennes and fostering numerous exchanges: cereals from the Causse, chestnuts from the Cévennes, olives from the valleys…
This Romanesque bridge has become the symbol of Le Vigan.

Numerous painters have captured the bridge on their canvases, capturing the perfection of the circle formed by the arch and its reflection in the water.

A path runs along the right bank of the Arre.
