The memorial is dedicated to the Corps Franc Pommiès, a prestigious formation of the Armed Resistance organized by General André Pommiès (1904-1972) during the Second World War.
The Magnoac region has been a hard core of this movement thanks to Lieutenant Soulès, a child of the country, a retired career soldier and an active member of the maquis.
In the centre of Castelnau-Magnoac, in the “Bougues” café, which served as a mailbox for the maquis, the “Memory” café museum space was opened.
On the highest point of Castelnau-Magnoac is built the Memorial of the Corps Franc Pommiès-49° RI, testifying the gratitude of our village to the action of these men of courage, these heroes of the shadows who worked for Freedom.
