MUSÉE ARCHÉOLOGIQUE
MAUBOURGUET , Hautes-Pyrénées – Cultural heritage
About
In addition to the mosaic and its incredible iconographic richness, updated in 1979, the museum also contains a large number of archaeological remains and objects discovered in the canton. Unique in its kind in the department, it is the essential museum of our Destination! A superb setting for this mosaic of tesserae, marble and terracotta. You enter through the entrance to the Tourist Office. The first part will make you aware of the scale of humanity against the time scale of all eras. From prehistory to the Middle Ages, you will admire treasures of coins, bifaces, axes, ceramics, various ancient pottery and even sarcophagi and the reproduction of the medieval cloister of the first church of Maubourguet. A museum created almost around its centerpiece of 20m²: the ceramics of the Ocean God, brought to light in the Saint Girons district a little by chance and coming from the Gallo-Roman villa (adorning the terms of its cold water basin) unearthed and erected probably around the 4th century. 250m² of exceptional exhibition.
