MUSÉE DE L’ABBAYE

SAINT-GUILHEM-LE-DESERT , Hérault – Cultural heritage

About

You won’t look at Gellone Abbey and the village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert the same way again once you’ve seen the film “Les Voyages du Cloître”. You will grasp the history of the site in just a few minutes, and will appreciate its beauty even more. It’s a fascinating film that plunges the audience into 17 minutes of turbulent history about the place that UNESCO has listed as a world heritage site. Located in the former monks’ refectory, a room that is impressively simple, charming and bright, the museum features two amazing reconstructions of the cloister using items from the 12th century. In addition there is the tomb of the abbey’s founder – William, Duke of Aquitaine – Charlemagne’s cousin and hero of the village of the same name (William is Guilhèm in the Occitan language).
