Museum of Resistance and Fighter

MONTAUBAN , Tarn-et-Garonne – Cultural heritage

About

The museum invites the visitor to better apprehend and understand the conflict and its consequences until today on the national history, that of Montauban and its region.

It invites the visitor to discover the great historical aspects of the Second World War, from the rise of totalitarianisms to the liberation of the national territory.
Built in four distinct thematic spaces, in a chronological logic, the space devoted to the Shoah can be discovered separately. A timeline surmounts the exhibition relating the war period to its landmark cultural, scientific and political events of the 20th and 21st century.
The museum is a place of discovery, exchange, testimony, education for generations to come.
1989: A former deportee resistance fighter offers an exhibition on the Second World War. This is the birth of the Museum of Resistance and Deportation dedicated to the 1939-1945 conflict in France but also in Montauban and in the department.
2014: Twenty-five years later, the work of memory continues. The Museum of Resistance and Combatant, enriched by donations, evolves with a new scenography and opens up to the conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries, within the Memory Pole.
The modernization of the museum has become obvious for the city of Montauban so that this place of memory becomes a center of information and education on conflicts and the questions they raise.
The news constantly questions and calls on wars, their legitimacy, their consequences, forgetting, forgiveness, … but also the willingness of some to deny their reality.
This museum is in this sense an additional means of approaching the history of yesterday and today.
The visitor is invited to discover the main aspects of the Second World War: its origin, the rise of totalitarianisms, the march towards war then the exodus, the occupation, the resistance, the deportation, the liberation, the duty of memory. . The local history of the conflict such as resistance fighters, foreigners, deportees, the Septfonds internment camp are discussed.
The museum invites reflection on man’s ability to want Peace through temporary exhibitions, conferences, activities for all ages and schools, screenings, guided tours.
It is a place of discovery, exchange, testimony, education for present and future generations.
The museum has a documentary collection that it offers for discovery in the consultation room reserved for this purpose and also open to the Heritage Fund of the MEMO and to the Municipal Archives.
