About
Located in the heart of the historic center, the Tower of the Prisons (which currently stands 16 m high) was a defensive building in the 11th and 12th centuries that controlled the Notre-Dame Gate. Transformed into a prison in the 16th century, during the Wars of Religion, the building has a cell on the first floor, two dungeons on the first floor, an intermediate level with a walkway and a top floor converted into a guard room and then into a jail known as the “passenger room” for prisoners transferred from Montpellier to Nîmes. A place of safety until 1917, the Tower was incorporated over the centuries into the urban fabric: to the south, adjoining, the Maison du Viguier (the king’s representative) whose Renaissance façade is a fine regional example (offices of the Tourist Office), to the north, the Fish Market (1821), home to the current Tourist Office. The Museum of the Tower of Prisons is to be discovered by means of a scenography or a guided tour (paying, by appointment).
