Museum of Mazères – Hôtel d’Ardouin

MAZERES , Ariège – Cultural heritage

About

Immerse yourself in a captivating journey through the history of Mazères by visiting the magnificent museum at the Hôtel Ardouin. Explore the astonishing remains from the Neolithic to the present day, and immerse yourself in the heart of the permanent exhibition “Barbarians in Southern Gaul”.

Housed in a handsome 16th-century town house, the Hôtel d’Ardouin museum offers visitors a chance to revisit the history of Mazères from Neolithic times to the present day. The hotel is bordered by a Renaissance-style garden (medicinal plants, vegetables, topiaries). An exhibition room presents the culture of pastel and its history.
The museum also features a permanent exhibition entitled Barbarians in Southern Gaul. It features objects (mainly belt buckles) excavated from the Merovingian necropolis at Bénazet. Visitors are invited to become an apprentice archaeologist and find out about the people who were buried there some 1,500 years ago. How did they live? What was their daily routine? What were their beliefs? How did they die? This exhibition, Barbarians in Southern Gaul, answers all these questions and many more besides! Come and see for yourself!
