About

This bridge, which is believed to be the oldest in the area (next to it is a cross dated 1724) is a remarkable single-arch bridge. In the absence of a bridge (destroyed or not yet built) the upper valley of Gèdre-Gavarnie was only accessible by two paths, one on the right bank and the other on the left bank. Only the left bank path via Sazos-l’Agnouède allowed the passage of cattle. The right bank path was blocked by the ladder lock, upstream of the Napoleon bridge, and only allowed the passage of men. Both banks were then only accessible by this bridge, which was solidly built and withstood the 1788 flood.
