Fortified Romanesque church Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
The village of Souyri is located on an old road that was used at certain times of the year by the pilgrims of Compostela.
It was then decided to build a church dedicated to Saint Jacques le Majeur. It was a priory dependent on the bishop of Rodez and then was united to him in 1249.
Of this first building of Romanesque style it remains only the choir and the walls of the nave.
The church was heightened and fortified at the end of the 14th century. The keep has 3 rooms and a guard room. The archways and machicolations are still visible.
In the XVth century, the chapel of the Virgin and the storage rooms were added. The Romanesque vault of the nave is replaced by a vault on cross-beams.
Spared by the revolutionaries, it will remain abandoned for many decades.
Renovated and enlarged in the 19th century, it has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1944. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
