Ariege Pyrenees Regional Nature Park

About
Take the Pyrenees mountain range, aim for the centre, focus slightly to the east, that’s it, you’re there, you’re in Ariège, in the Ariege Pyrenees Regional Nature Park. Welcome to Ariège!
With 138 communes, a gateway town, Foix, and associated communes, the Natural Park represents half the surface area of the Ariège department. Although it is sparsely populated in the mountainous areas, it remains a dynamic region, offering a wealth of opportunities, both for living and working here (particularly if you want to set up your own business), and for having a good time!
In our mountains, some peaks reach 3,000 m (Montcalm) and 2,800 m (Mont Valier and its famous Arcouzan glacier). Here you’ll find remarkable biodiversity, some of it endemic, forests, as well as beautiful areas of estives, high-altitude pastures grazed by flocks of sheep, cows and horses. The transhumance is an opportunity to meet the farmers and their herds in a festive atmosphere.
The Park is also made up of valleys, each with its own personality, villages at the end of the world and dynamic little towns with lively markets, limestone hillsides offering rich dry grasslands home to numerous species of orchid, deciduous forests – in short, a mosaic of landscapes to discover in every season.
The NRP and the Tourist Office do not have the same scope of action.
19 of the 138 communes are part of both the NRP and the Tourist Office. These are the communes in the Auzat and Saurat valleys.
The NRP’s activities cover a wide range of areas, including nature tourism, nature conservation and the environment.
