Fanjeaux

38 min from Carcassonne. Stop: Parking. You can see Fanjeaux's stone crown on the headland from a distance. This medieval town was hit hard by the stormy crusade against the Cathars in the 12th century and became the headquarters of the Dominican Order.

Wander its streets lined with old houses, soak up its timeless air and gaze at views of the Cathar hills and Canal du Midi in the distance. Find out more.

Mirepoix

52 min from Carcassonne. Stop: Cours Petit Pied. Prepare to fall in love with Mirepoix: a town based on the bastide layout where the Cathars once found refuge and a sympathetic ear.

Mirepoix is bursting with heritage and part of the "Foix Montségur, cités médiévales" Grand Site Occitanie. Just take the main square and its 15th century roof tiles, carved joists (see the Maison des Consuls) and half-timbered houses. Mouth-watering Mirepoix serves up a whole host of foodie events from April to November. Find out more.
