Places to eat and sleep in Brassac, Lacaune and Murat-sur-Vèbre.

Sidobre, la rivière de rochers

Le Bez

17 min from Castres. Stop: Vialavert. Experience a small slice of the Sidobre's giant granite rocks that make this mountain range so unique.

Take a 10 minute walk from the bus stop to the Sentier des Immortels footpath and visit the Maison du Sidobre visitor centre. You can also walk from Vialavert to Merle Lake on the Sentier des Sagnes footpath (2.5km).

Brassac

30 min from Castres. Stop: Centre. Brassac is a pretty village on the Agout riverbanks. It's a great spot for mountain biking and hosts the French X-Cross championship.

An impressive humpback bridge (listed as a Monument Historique) spans the river with 2 castles on either side of it: one built by Catholics and the other by Protestants. You can hire an e-MTB and explore the surrounding trails. The Fetes de Brassac in early August are a real treat. Find out more

Jambon de Lacaune

Lacaune

55 min from Castres. Stop: Av. Bonnafous. The Fontaine des Pisseurs on Place du Griffoul proves how good the water in Lacaune-les-Bains is for your bladder.

But Lacaune is even more famous for its cured meat: Lacaune ham. Age-old craftsmanship goes into making it a premium product. See how it's made at Oberti or visit the Maison de l'Histoire de la Charcuterie. Then relax at the Sources Chaudes spa and pool. Find out more.

murat-sur-vebre-statues-menhirs-walter-pascale-1

Murat-sur-Vèbre

1 hr 20 from Castres. Stop: Bourg.

Visit the Musée des Mégalithes in the village. Countless mysterious statue-menhirs (dating from 3300 to 2200 BC) have been discovered in the Monts de Lacaune. Murat-sur-Vèbre is a stage on the Way of St James (Arles Way) and the start point for several hikes. Find out more

Le Sidobre - Rocher des 3 fromages

NB: the 769 "Castres - Lacrouzette" liO bus

also covers Sidobre but only Monday to Friday with no service in summer.

However, the 769 bus is popular among keen walkers as it stops in Lacrouzette. The start point for a GR de Pays (regional footpath) and other hiking trails exploring the spectacular rocky Sidobre are just a 40 minute walk from Lacrouzette village.
