Castres

On the Occitanie Rail Tour

Discover Castres

Castres is first and foremost the hometown of two great men. You probably know the great French politician Jean Jaurès, born in Castres in 1859. You probably also know Francisco Goya: Castres celebrates the Spanish painter with a one-of-a-kind museum in France.

The town is also home to a great rugby team, Castres Olympique. Rugby fever and the local art de vivre are quite complementary in this town, located on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

Must-see

Between the streets of the old town and the banks of the River Agout, don't miss out on any of Castres' must-sees.

In Castres, you'll enjoy:

  • Taking a boat trip in a “coche d'eau” (barge) on the River Agout, lined with the old pastel-coloured houses of tanners, weavers and dyers who used to work there.
  • Visiting Castres during its famous Venetian Carnival in March.
